MADD Victim Impact Panel Speech & the Vision that Guides My Life

  • Minneapolis Police Department 3101 Nicollet Avenue Minneapolis, MN, 55408 United States (map)

On 8/19/1990, I broke up with alcohol.  I grieved losing the relationship, but the divorce was necessary.

When I was sober 90 days, Mary Jo Robinson spoke at our recovery group both as a MADD member and as a person in long-term recovery.  After hearing her talk about forgiving the man who killed her son, I shared with her that I killed someone’s son, too, and wondered if the mother could ever forgive me.

Mary Jo then got me involved with MADD as a speaker.  I first attended a Victim Impact Panel in December of 90 to see what it was all about and prayed to know if I should get involved with MADD or not.  My prayers had been answered with a resounding YES!  Synchronicities abounded in the MADD Panel beyond the pale of mathematical probability.  I observed God's Handwriting on the proverbial wall and knew I was ‘supposed to’ do this work.

I started speaking for MADD January 18th of 91, and have been at it ever since.  Later, Mary Jo told me that MADD is my "Ministry."

I had a vision of recovery and speaking when I was 19 years old.  It took 14 years before the dream came true.  That Vision still guides my life.

So this Saturday, 8/19/2017, I'll be celebrating 27 years of sobriety and speaking for MADD.  40 years ago, before I sobered up, I hit and killed Little Timmy.  Today, we are a team.  Little Timmy did not die in vain.
