To Spank or Not to Spank

Someone on antisocial media posted this anti-spanking argument as if it is ‘reasonable. I think the argument is specious. Some stupid people will stop doing something that is hurting someone only when a person gets in their face and threatens them with pain. They might not understand why they should not do the harmful thing (like impaired driving), but even highly intelligent people do stupid things, like get behind the wheel and drive impaired. Impaired brains engage in impaired activity. At the same time, I see the sense of not spanking a child who is acting out violently against someone else, because it sends a message that violence is ok if you are big enough or have enough authority to ‘get away with it.

You cannot apply the laws of reason to an unreasonable mind, but you can touch their heart, and once you’ve done that, you have a chance of effecting real change. A ton of head ain’t worth an ounce of heart.
